The Story Behind The Shot

The Monte Rosa Hut was built in 2009, the method of construction and technology developed by ETH architecture students. With the aim of self-sufficiency, the hut produces 90% of its energy supply autonomously through solar energy and collects the melt water to filter and reuse it. The  shape and aluminium exterior remind of a rock crystal. I photographed the building for its opening in September 2009 and since then have had a few more jobs there. I love being up there: being able to witness extraordinary Swiss innovation in the most stunning environment of the Gorner glacier, the second largest glacier in the Alpine region, and behind it the Matterhorn, Switzerland’s most famous mountain. I always like hiking up there, as the journey itself is worth the visit, and spending the night in this unique location.
