The Story Behind The Shot

This is one of my favourite pictures. I took it on my trip in 1996 driving from Chengdu, China, up to the Tibetan Plateau. I had to have a driver and two official guides: one Tibetan Chinese and one Han Chinese as we had to cross a restricted area. On one of my many visits to the monastery I ended up in the kitchen observing the monk preparing tea. After a while, I took out my Hasselblad and took this shot. I was shooting on film and only pressed the shutter once. And that’s the picture.
